What Is Cydia?

After we have talked about What Is Jailbreak? And we have removed the limitations set by Apple on the iOS Devices. The next question is where to get those unapproved apps, tweaks, themes and more. Well From Cydia. So this make us ask what is Cydia?
Cydia

What Is Cydia?

Cydia is a 3rd party app which has been developed by Jay Freeman (Saurik). The app is very much like the Apple app store but with out the down sides of the App Store. 400,000+ apps is available now via Cydia. Some for free and others for a small amount of money. Cydia is 100% safe as every app on it is approved. In Cydia you pay for your apps via Paypal or Amazon gift cards.
What is repositories?
Developers save their tweaks and apps on an online hub called Repository that gives quick and easy access to download and install the apps.

Cydia’s Interface:

Cydia has 5 tabs in it’s user interface:
  • Home: Here you will find some applications sponsored, more Sources FAQ, account info and some important settings.
  • Sections: Here you will find the apps sorted by category.
  • Changes: Here you will find the latest updates and the new apps.
  • Manage: Here you will have access to all storage, You can manage your apps, remove them, add and remove repos.

Apple Monitoring iPhone 4S Owners For Finding A Fix To Battery Drain Problem

Recently a lot of iPhone 4S owners are complaining that their new device has a serious case of battery drain. The battery on iPhone 4S which should be performing well considering its new, actually drains quite a lot and is becoming a source of nuisance for the owners. Apple engineers are reaching out to iPhone 4S owners and monitoring their devices, with their permission, in order to find a fix to this problem.

One such iPhone 4S owner, who was approached by Apple engineers has shared the method the fruit company is using in order to find a fix to battery drainage issue.

My battery life was extremely poor - 10% drop in standby every hour. I noticed that the usage figure was roughly half that of standby, even when the phone was not being used, so I assumed something was crashing or running in the background. I switched off all the new features including Siri and location services, but it was still really poor. I also tried setting up a clean phone with no apps but it is still really poor.
I then got a call from a senior [Apple] engineer who said he had read my post and was ‘reaching out’ to users for data and admitted this was an issue (and that they aren’t close to finding a fix!) and asked lots of questions about my usage and then asked if he could install the file below and that he would call back the day after to retrieve the info. I extracted the file from my Mac after a sync and emailed it to him. He was incredibly helpful and apologetic in the typical Apple way!
Have you been facing similar battery drainage issue on your iPhone 4S? Has anyone of you been approached by Apple? Hopefully the company will release a fix for this soon and this issue will be over. We'll update you more as it comes in.

iOS 5 Custom Firmwares Semi Tethered (DOWNLOAD LINKS)

Few days ago we showed you how to semi tether iOS 5 jailbreak using a tweak in Cydia developed by BigBoss. The semi tethered jailbreak is a kind of jailbreak which closes the gap between untethered and tethered jailbreaks. It’s specifically made for some cases where you’re away from your computer and your iPhone got rebooted.

For more information about semi tethered, tethered and untethered jailbreak, you can read my previous post here.
Today, we’re bringing something you’ll surely like. For anyone got some issues or problems while using the semi tether jailbreak, we’ve a fix for you.
Below we’ve direct download links for iOS 5 custom IPSW firmwares already semi tethered pre-jailbroken using Sn0wbreeze. Oh, and they’ll help you also if your iPhone is not activated.
Once downloaded your custom firmware, you can restore using iTunes but you may face some errors. You can fix any errors using one of the below tools:
  • iREB developed by iH8sn0w (download here).
  • Redsn0w by the iPhone Dev Team, you can use Pwned DFU mode to fix any errors (downloadhere).
  • TinyUmbrella by notcom to fix errors like 3194 by starting TSS servers (download here).
Let us know in case you need further help.

iOS 5 Semi-Tethered Jailbreak Released, Here’s Your Full Guide!

While both the iPhone Dev Team and Chronic Dev Team are working on finding an untethered solution for iOS 5 jailbreak, the BigBoss has released an iOS 5 semi-tethered jailbreak. This word might be strange to you, that’s why we’re writing a deep walkthrough below.
iOS 5 Semi Tethered Jailbreak

What’s Semi-Tethered jailbreak

iOS 5 semi-tethered jailbreak is a kind of jailbreak which allows you to reboot your device without needing to a compute for “Just Tethered Boot” option in redsn0w. Yes, it’s similar to an untethered jailbreak but actually 99% of your jailbreak related apps and tweaks won’t work at all. The semi-tethered jailbreak is made as a protection for you if your device reboots while you’re on the road. It allows you to make the most of important functions but you won’t get back to fully functional state until using redsn0w again, when you get home.
For myself, my device sometimes stuck on Apple logo while I’m on the road because of the tethered jailbreak. That will help you a lot in case you’re facing like these problems.

What’s Tethered jailbreak

Tethered jailbreak means you’ll have to plug your iOS device into your compute everytime it’s rebooted and choose the just tethered boot option from redsn0w. In case you don’t have a computer near you (with redsn0w), your device will be stuck on Apple logo.

What’s Untethered jailbreak

That’s the jailbreak where you can reboot your device without having to worry about it not booting up again. Hackers are currently working to get untethered jailbreak on iOS 5.

Supported devices & firmares

You know, they’re still the same. No iPad 2 or iPhone 4S support. It supports iOS 5 on the following devices.
  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 3GS New Bootrom
  • iPad 1
  • iPod Touch 4G
  • iPod Touch 3G

What functions can be done and can’t be using Semi-Tethered jailbreak

Well, the BigBoss summed up almost everything important:
1) Can use phone, sms (text messages)
2) Can use every other stock app on iphone.
3) Cannot use mobile safari
4) Can use other appstore web browsers such as atomic web browser
5) Cannot use mail app. You could install a gmail app from appstore or such instead.
6) You cannot use any jailbreak tweak, app, cydia until you boot tethered.
7) While in the semitether booted state, you should not add a jailbreak ios5 notification such as sbsettings to notifications during this state or your device will be stuck in a respring loop until you get home to “boot tethered”.

How to get Semi-Tethered jailbreak

Below is full guide to get it:
STEP 1: You must have iOS 5 installed, and tethered jailbreak (guide posted here).
STEP 2: Once jailbroken, open Cydia then tap on Manage > Sources.
STEP 3: Now tap on Edit from the upper right of the screen then add and write down the following repository:
http://thebigboss.org/semitether
STEP 4: Search for SemiTether, install it then reboot your device.
STEP 5: Once done, you’ll be able to reboot your device without being stuck on Apple logo.
We’ve tried the semi-tethered jailbreak for iOS 5 on iPhone 4 GSM and it’s working perfect. However, the SemiTether solution is in beta and you may face some problems.
Here’s the video guide:
Let us know any further questions.

Download Redsn0w 0.9.9b7 to Reduce Jailbreak Time from 210 to 80 Seconds Only

Just a quick little heads up. MusclNerd of iPhone Dev-team has just announced on his Twitter the release of Redsn0w 0.9.9b7 for both Windows and Mac. But the question is what's new on Redsn0w 0.9.9 b7 ?

MusleNerd and iPhone Dev-team released Redsn0w 0.9.9b7 specially to improve the time of jailbreak process. Redsn0w 0.9.9 b7 reduces the time to actually perform the jailbreak from 210 seconds to 80 seconds (decreased by 60%). Redsn0w 0.9.9b7 still tethered jailbreak for iOS 5.
After some feedback on reddit, we’ve decided to make the initial jailbreak as quick as possible by no longer “stashing” the applications by default during the redsn0w run. This reduces the time to actually perform the jailbreak from 210 seconds to 80 seconds (60 percent!). However, you make up for much of that the first time you launch Cydia, which will then want to stash the applications. You can choose whether you want redsn0w or Cydia to stash in the Preferences pane.
Thanks Dev-team for your continues improvement. But we do need iOS 5 untethered jailbreak.

Winterboard For iOS 5 Officially Released

After we’ve showed you how to get an unofficial version of Winterboard on iOS 5, now comes the official one. Winterboard iOS 5 version is now available on Cydia for free. Winterboard for iOS 5 will make the new software even better with some new themes.
Winterboard For iOS 5
For those who don’t know, iOS 5 is currently tethered jailbroken on all devices except the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. There’s no untethered jailbreak on iOS 5 and don’t believe any spammers.
Although Winterboard for iOS 5 has been released, that doesn’t mean that all themes are currently compatible with iOS 5. Some are compatible and others are not.
You can get Winterboard by navigating to Cydia (and let it to reload) then search for “Winterboard” and you’ll see version 0.9.3211-1. The unreleased version was 0.9.3901.
Let us know which themes working with you and which are not.

Download Redsn0w 0.9.9b6 - Jailbreak iOS 5 - Fix Location Services [Winows / Mac]

RedsnOw 0.9.9 b6 download available. MuscleNerd the iPhone Dev-team's spokesman has just announced the release of Redns0w 0.9.9b6 for Mac and Windows. Redsn0w 0.9.9b6 comes specially to eliminates the network crash that happened when using Location Services with jailbroken iPhone 3GS on iOS 5.
We’ve released version 0.9.9b6 of redsn0w, with both a functional fix and cosmetic fix for iOS5 jailbreakers. For iPhone3GS owners with the 06.15 baseband, this redsn0w eliminates the network crash you saw when using Location Services in iOS5 (in fact, you don’t even need to disable Location Services anymore during the initial setup). The cosmetic fix is to the visual countdown you see when going into DFU mode.

It’s okay to re-run this redsn0w over an existing device jailbroken at iOS5. Just choose “Jailbreak” again and de-select Cydia (in other words, all the checkboxes will be unchecked). If you are lucky enough to have an old-bootrom iPhone3GS, please pre-select the IPSW first (redsn0w can’t yet auto-detect the FW version of your old-bootrom 3GS if it’s already been jailbroken).
For Who still didn't jailbreak their devices on iOS 5 :

You can follow our previous guide - Click Here - but with using Redns0w 0.9.9b6 (download links below)

For who already jailbroke their devices on iOS 5:

You can re-run this Redsn0w 0.9.9 b6 over an existing device jailbroken on iOS 5. Just choose "Jailbreak" again and de-select Cydia.

Does this mean that Redsn0w 0.9.9b6 will fix GPS issue for iPhone 3GS users on 6.15.00 baseband ?

In a word, No. As the 06.15.00 baseband has "assisted GPS" (aGPS), so it'll use things like tower triangulation in apps like Google Maps. These may be techy words, but you have to know that the fix for 6.15.00 GPS still not available

Unlock iPhone 4, 3GS with Ultrasn0w 1.2.4

Ultrasn0w 1.2.4 is out to unlock iOS 5. As we reported you yesterday, the iPhone Dev-team has successfully released ultrasn0w 1.2.4 to unlock iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS on iOS 5 with the already unlockable basebands.

So if you wanna unlock your iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS on iOS 5, you MUST jailbreak your iPhone 4, 3GS via custom ipsw. Redsn0w now has the ability to create such a custom IPSW. Then you will be able to unlock your iPhone 4, 3GS on iOS 5 with ultrasn0w 1.2.4.

From iPhone Dev-Team Blog, Please Read Carefully :
We’ve updated ultrasn0w to be compatible with iOS5, which came out a few days ago. While ultrasn0w 1.2.4 doesn’t add support for any new basebands, the update is required for any ultrasn0w unlockers trying out iOS5 (it remains backwards compatible though, so you should be able to use it no matter what firmware you have).

The supported basebands for the iPhone 3G and 3GS are 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, and 06.15.00. The baseband supported for the iPhone4 is 01.59.00.

Remember, the only way to get to iOS5 while preserving your ultrasn0w-compatible baseband is by using a custom IPSW. redsn0w now has the ability to create such a custom IPSW for you (at least on Macs…the same capability for Windows will be coming soon).

The majority of people who use ultrasn0w at iOS5 right now will probably be those with old-bootrom iPhone3GS devices, since they already have an untethered jailbreak via redsn0w. For everyone else, the iOS5 jailbreak is currently tethered and you need to “Just boot” tethered with redsn0w every time your phone reboots. That’s not always easy to do if your phone reboots while away from home!
Important Trick for iPhone 3GS users with baseband 06.15:
Note: there’s a special “trick” that iPhone3GS owners with baseband 06.15 need for iOS5. During the new setup screens you see when you start iOS5 for the first time, you’ll be asked about Location Services. Be sure to select “Disable Location Services” when asked! Later on in the setup, you’ll have the chance to turn on Location Services again when asked if you want to use “Find my iPhone”. It’s fine to turn it back on at that point, if that’s your desire (or you can always go in and enable it in Settings.app).
iPhone 3GS with baseband 06.15 and accidentally updated to stock iOS 5 ipsw - How to fix this ?
Also, some iPhone3GS users with the 06.15 baseband may have tried to install iOS5 using a stock IPSW (even though you should never ever try to use a stock IPSW if you’re an ultrasn0w unlocker). If you did try this, your baseband is probably in an inconsistent state, and you’ll need to reflash the 06.15 baseband again (using redsn0w). Be very careful if you use redsn0w to reflash the iPad baseband — don’t interrupt the process! And please avoid using stock IPSWs in the future :) Unlockers should never go near stock IPSWs.
As usual we are preparing full step by step guide to show you how to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone 4, 3GS on iOS 5 with Redsn0w and ultrasn0w 1.2.4

iOS 5 : Downgrade Blocked Starting From iOS 5

In early June, after Apple launched iPhone OS 5 beta 2 MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev-Team announced for the first time that the restoration with SHSH blobs saved near the endHe said that "the day of restoration with SHSH blobs saved are coming to an end(Apple is much more intelligent with APTicket".

Today MusclNerd is confirming what he said earlier, he announced that saving iOS 5 SHSH blobs is not available anymore. To make it clear, MusclNerd words mean that you won't be able to downgrade from future versions of iOS 5 to pervious versions of iOS 5. But you still able to downgrade from iOS 5 to any lower iOS version that you have its SHSH blobs.

But we still have some hopes, as MuscleNerd has mentioned that Dev-team will be able to defeat this issue with more cat & mouse. So, we highly recommend to stay away from any upcoming update of iOS 5.x.x until hackers confirm that it's jailbreakable firmware.
