Jailbreak / iPad 2 : Comex Reduces Jailbreak Install Time - Will execute For iPad 2

Comex has drastically improved the time it takes to jailbreak and gotten rid of the Cydia's 'Reorganizing Filesystem' message by using unionfs instead of the current stashing approach. According to a long tweet posted moments ago, Comex plans to apply the new approach to his upcoming iPad 2 jailbreak.

-----
If you don't know, the stashing approach jailbreaks have been using for years-- Cydia's "Reorganizing Filesystem"-- involves moving some large directories from the small / partition into the large /var partition, then creating symlinks from the original to the new location. This both ensures that any additional stuff put in those directories by packages will end up in the /var partition, and frees up space on the / partition for files created outside of those directories. However, the process has some issues, like taking forever to do when you jailbreak (I am a bit fanatical about speed), pretty much requiring the jailbreak to reboot the system to ensure there aren't any running applications pointing to the old files (ditto about speed, I want a jailbreak to not even require a respring, as in star, but since star used stashing, some obscure things could cause issues before a reboot), and seriously confusing the sandbox code in the kernel (because each application has a sandbox with a list of allowed filenames, but after the symlink has moved files, the filenames no longer match), requiring that code to be patched (it needs to be patched anyway these days because tweaks have to run under the sandboxes of the applications they're hooking, but depend on accessing various directories; but it still feels good to get rid of a kludge).

With unionfs (which was saurik's idea originally), new files are created in the /var partition, and merged with files in the corresponding directories in the / partition, so no files need to be moved, no descriptors are invalidated, and I think the sandbox code won't notice what happened. It also opens the door for upgrading the base operating system without destroying the jailbreak files (although maybe iOS 5 delta updates will already allow this? I haven't looked at them yet).

I've wanted to do this since literally a year ago (that's the date of the nullfs checkin, since I was dumb and thought I wanted that instead of unionfs), but I never got around to making it work properly.

So, I just hope that I can get rid of the crashes my meddling with unionfs's code have introduced, and fix it for the iPad 2 (my dumped copies of iPad 2 kernels do not include symbols; I wrote a small BinDiff-like tool to copy over symbols from a kernel for another device, but it's not perfect) and that there aren't any performance issues.
-----

MuscleNerd notes that with unionfs Apple apps don't need to be moved. That means they retain their entitlements, simplifying the sandboxing problem.

We'll keep updating you with more information as it becomes available.

iOS 5 Untethered Jailbreak - Will Block Installos

i0n1c, the guy behind untether hack in iOS 4.3.x jailbreak, has just found motivator to start digging for untether hack for iOS 5 jailbreak.

The idea to create a jailbreak that blocks pirated apps is going ping pong in my head. Might be a good motivator to do the iOS 5.0 untether.
Hmmm @milicigoran had a very good idea. Future jailbreaks should block Installous from working.
As i0n1c has mentioned in some tweets, that he will work on iOS 5 untethered jailbreak that blocks pirated apps from being installed in iDevices running iOS 5. As i0n1c mentioned that untethered iOS 5 jailbreak will block Installous from working.

iOS 5 untethered jailbreak released date:

Actullay i0n1c is talkative, and only gives few valued information, but in my vision he shall work hard to win the competition with Comex who is also working now in JailbreakMe 3.0. What do you think.

iOS 5 Jailbreak Released - iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, 3G, iPad 1 - Redsn0w [Tutorial]

MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev-team has released Redsn0w 0.9.8b1 to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 1, here's the full step by step guide that shows you how to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 1 on iOS devices.

iOS jailbreak - Supported Devices :

  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPod touch 4G
  • iPad 1
  • iPhone3GS
  • iPhone4 (GSM)
  • iPhone4 (CDMA)

Important Notes :

UNLOCKERS AND THOSE PRESERVING THEIR UNLOCKABLE BASEBANDS SHOULD STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS! You will very likely lose your unlockable baseband if you try to install iOS 5.

THIS JAILBREAK IS INTENDED ONLY FOR DEVELOPERS OF JAILBROKEN APPS! There are just too many broken components (Apple’s official apps, 3rd-party App Store apps, Cydia apps, MobileSubstrate apps, etc) for this to be useful to anyone but those truly looking to fix bugs in their iOS 5 jailbroken apps. (Seriously!)

THIS REDSN0W WILL NOT HACTIVATE 5.0b1! You need to be an iOS developer with a registered UDID to get past all the new activation screens. PLEASE DON’T PIRATE APPLE SOFTWARE! Only registered devs with Macs can develop iOS applications, and only those people will have legitimate access to the beta IPSWs.

THIS IS A TETHERED JAILBREAK ONLY! No new exploits are being exposed with this jailbreak (it uses geohot’s limera1n bootrom exploit), but that comes at a cost. You will need to use redsn0w to “Just boot tethered now” to be able to use many things, including Cydia and Safari. If you see a white icon for Cydia, or if Cydia or Safari crash when you open them, it’s because you didn’t boot tethered.

The way redsn0w works, you will very likely be able to use this on upcoming iOS5 betas, just by continuing to point redsn0w at the 5.0b1 IPSW. So keep that IPSW handy!
Required Downloads:
  • Download Redsn0w 0.9.8b1 for Mac
  • Download iOS 5.0 beta 1 for developers - For Non-developers Click Here.
  • Download iTunes 10.5 for developers - For non-developers (Google it)

Full step by step guide :

Step 1: Restore to iOS 5.0 beta 1

Step 2: Start Redsn0w and point it to iOS 5.0 beta1 firmware ipsw file.
Step 3: Now select “Install Cydia” and click “Next”. Optionally (if available), you can also select any other option you like.
Step 4: Now make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer before you click “Next”.
At this stage you will be presented with a screen where you will be guided on how to enter DFU mode. Quickly hold “Power” button and then while holding the “Power” button, you will now have to hold “Home” button too. Now after few seconds release “Power” button but keep holding “Home” button until installation begins.

Step 5: Wait until you get iOS 5.0 beta 1 jailbroken in few minutes. Congratulations.

Tethered Jailbreak : Once current Redsn0w jailbreak is still tethered jailbreak, you will be required to connect your iOS device with your computer and run Redsn0w again then choose "Just boot tethered right now".

UISettings Possible Now On iOS 5 Notification Center

Earlier, we had reported that third party widgets for iOS 5 notification center were possible. Now, moments ago, a new package has been released in Cydia. Called UISettings, this is the first third party widget for the iOS 5 notification center. Best of all, its free!

UISettings for iOS 5 has functions similar to SBSettings. Once installed, UISettings appears in the notification center right away, above the notifications and below the default notification center widgets. UI Settings lets you re-spring your device, power it off, reboot it and it also allows you to turn WiFi, Bluetooth and Airplane mode On or OFF straight from the notification center and you can also adjust brightness without having to go in the Settings.app

To get UISettings on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch running iOS 5 beta 1, you must follow the guide we posted on how to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 1 tethered using redsn0w 0.9.8b1 for Mac. Once you have jailbroken iOS 5 on your device, simply add this repository in Cydia: http://qwertyoruiop.com/beta.

Then download UISettings for iOS 5 notification center from this repository and you are good to go. We're hopeful that many great widgets for the notification center will be coming in the near future, as UISettings is just the start.

iOS 5 Notification Center, What's New ?

It has been learnt that third party widgets in the iOS 5 notification center are possible. As of now, Apple has only included widgets of its Stocks and Weather apps in the notification center, and does not give any option to add third party widgets. However, there might be a way to get third party widgets in the notification center.

Some references found in the file system of iOS 5 indicate that it is possible for Apple to release an entirely new tool along with the SDK for developers who want to make widgets for their applications. As you can see, in the WeeAppPlugins folder, the default widgets of notification center reside, and it is possible that this folder may play host to third party widgets for the notification center.

While it is possible that Apple may only allow third party widgets to display limited information or have limited functionality, one must not forget that many developers choose the way of the jailbreak when developing their apps and tweaks. So it is highly likely that we might see third party widgets for iOS 5 notification center release in Cydia, as it is now possible to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 1 tethered on Mac.

We'll be sure to let you know once third party widgets are available in Cydia. Keep watching this blog.

Important notes:
  • Please note that this is iOS 5 beta 1 for SDK, and no there is no jailbreak available for iOS 5 so far.
